Posting – Maximum Score by Hole
Adjusted Gross Scores – Maximum Score by Hole
Before you post your score you need to see if any of your holes should be adjusted for the maximum number of strokes that you can enter for any given hole. For most competitions, you will reflect your true score, even if you score a 15 on a hole! However, when you post the score you would reduce that 15 to your maximum strokes.
Remember to use the Course Handicap, not your Index. Your maximum score will be different at different courses as your Course Handicap changes to reflect the difficulty of the course. For example, someone with a Handicap Index of 20.3 has a Course Handicap of 16 for Cross Creek Yellow tees and but if she plays the red tees at Oak Knoll she has a Course Handicap of 21.
Your maximum score is a net double bogey. Once you know your Course Handicap you can use the hole by hole handicap ranking to determine your handicap strokes by hole. If you calculate your net score by subtracting the handicap allocation from the gross score, if this net score is more than a double bogey (par +2) you can only report the net double bogey.
Example:
Par 3 double bogey on par 3 = 3+2 = 5 so the maximum is 5 + handicap strokes
If my Course Handicap gives me one stroke on that par 3, my maximum is 6
If my Course Handicap give me two strokes on that par 3, my maximum is 7
Par 4 double bogey on par 4 = 4+2 = 6 so the maximum is 6 + handicap strokes
If my Course Handicap gives me one stroke on that par 4, my maximum is 7
If my Course Handicap give me two strokes on that par 4, my maximum is 8
If your Course Handicap is between 19 and 35 it is likely that you will have a maximum of 6 on some par 3s and 7 on others and a maximum of 7 on some par 4s and 8 on others.
What if I don’t want to do this much calculating?
When you enter your score – on the computer at the course, on the GHIN phone app, or at the GHIN site on your PC - if you choose to enter your score hole by hole the system will do the calculation for you.
